Nellie Holland Russell, born Nellie Lydia Russell, was the daughter of Joseph Russell and Martha Jane (called "Mattie") Holland.  Mattie Holland was the fifth child of West Holland and Sallie Grice.  She was born in Wayne County, North Carolina, and moved to Kansas with her family in 1869.

Nellie Lydia Russell was born 2 March 1886 in Hecla, South Dakota, the oldest of three children.  Her family moved to New York City in 1893.  Nellie was an attorney.  She never married but from her correspondences, it is clear that she enjoyed her extended family very much.  She started searching her ancestors about 1948, at the age of 42.

This picture, taken in 2002, is of one of the homes where Nellie spent her summers.   She also summed at Brookhaven, Long Island, New York.  She spent the winters -- 3 to 4 months -- in Brooklyn, New York.  Nellie died in 1967.
