6. Louisa Jane Holland was born in 1844.  Jane Holland's name is recorded as Louisa Jane Holland in several places but I am told she went by Jane, and her gravestone refers to her as Jane.  A picture of her son David's marriage record shows her name as Louisa Jane.  It can be seen in the Public Records section of this web site.   She married Edward Sion Smith.  Sion Smith was the first son of David Oliver Smith and his wife Unicey (Eunice) Selah (Celia), (Woodard D. and Celia's daughter), called Nicey Holland, making him Jane's first cousin once removed (see Notes section¹⁰⁾.  He was born 30 September 1846, probably in North Carolina.  This family was listed in the 1880 Johnston County, North Carolina, census with Sion, age 34, "Lorriza" Jane, 35; with children Gaston Oliver, 10; Needham P., 8; David Columbus, 4; and William E., 1.¹⁰⁵

Jane Holland died in 1906 at age 62.  Edward Sion Smith died 31 July 1894 at age 47.  They are both buried in the Patrick Holland Cemetery near Micro in Johnston County, North Carolina.  A picture of their graves is in the Album section of this web site.  Jane Holland is the only one of Exum Holland's children from his first marriage who was buried in this cemetery, which contains the grave of his 2nd wife and most of the children from that marriage.  

The information on Jane Holland and the Oliver Smith family was provided by Carole Coates of Boone, North Carolina, great-great-granddaughter of Jane Holland; and by Martha Hill.  Other contributors are noted where their contributions occur.

1.  Gaston Oliver Smith was born 14 December 1869, died 17 October 1903.  He married Zilphia Combs on 31 December 1888.  She was born 1874 and died 1936.  They settled in the Micro community of Johnston County, North Carolina on land between Old Beulah Church and Oak Grove Inn in the late 1800's.  They are buried in the Smith Family Cemetery near the ruins of the Smith home at the homeplace still owned by descendants of the family.

1.  Lyda Smithwas born in 1890. She married Oscar Davis

2.  Robert Lester Smith was born in 1891. He married Effie Britt.

3.  Harvey Norman Smith was born in 1893. He married Madie Robertson.

4.  Sadie Smith was born in 1895. She married Alonza Radford.

5.  Pearl Smith was born in 1898. She married Jesse Godwin.

6.  Hubert Smith was born in 1901. He married Norma Belle Hatcher.

7.  Luby Smith was born in 1901.  He did not marry.

8.  Coy Gaston Smith was born in 1903. He married Sallie Dees.

2.  Needham Smith was born about 1872.  He married 1st Cassie Jones, married 2nd Emma Starling;  settled in Johnston County, North Carolina.

3.  David Columbus Smith was born about 1876.  He married Elizabeth Creech on 14 December 1893.  She was the daughter of Worley and Martha Creech of Johnston County, North Carolina.  The ceremony was performed in Elizabeth's parents' home, officiated by Charles F. Kirby, Justice of the Peace.⁸  They settled in Johnston County, North Carolina.  A picture of their marriage record is in the Public Records section of this web site. 
Child of David Columbus Smith and Elizabeth Creech:

1.  Lula A. Smith was born 25 November 1895.  She married Joseph Bezzel Coats on 10 June 1914.  He was born 21 May 1895.  Lula Smith died 14 April 1942. 

2.  Willie Ida Smith was born 10 January 1901, and died 22 January1901.  She is buried in the Patrick Holland Cemetery in Micro, Johnston County, North Carolina.  There is a picture of her gravestone in the Album section of this web site.  

4.  William Exum Smith was born 15 August 1878, near Micro in Johnston County, North Carolina.  He married Addie Beatrice Wellons.  She was born 10 September 1883 near Micro.  Will and Addie started out in Selma, in Johnston County, then soon settled in Wilson, North Carolina.  Will Smigh died 20 March 1940.  Addie Wellons died 22 September 1966.  They are buried in the Wilson City Cemetery.  The information on the William Exum Smith family was contributed by Jack Smith of Towson, Maryland. ¹⁰⁵

1.  Wilbur Edgar Smith was born14 March 1902 in Micro, Johnston County, North Carolina.  He married Clyde Lee Lewis from Elm City in Wilson County, North Carolina.  She was born 28 July 1907 and died in 1968.

1.  Wilbur Edgar Smith, Jr. was born 16 January 1932, in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.  He married Lucrece Bilisoly.  She was born 25 June 1938 in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina. 
Children of Wilbur E. Smith, Jr. and Lucrece Bilisoly:

1.  Sharon Anne Smith was born 4 August 1960 in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.  She married O. Timothy Blevins.  Timothy was born 11 October 1957, in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes County, North Carolina.

2.  Kathryn L. Smith was born 26 July 1963 in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.

2. Ida Henrietta Smith was born 15 December 1903, in Micro, Johnston County, North Carolina.  She married 1st, [unknown]; she married 2nd,  Hubert Riddick from Scotland Neck in Halifax County, North Carolina.  They did not have children.  Hubert Riddick died in 1963; Henrietta died in 1988.

3.  Lela Mae Smith was born 25 December 1905, in Micro, Johnston County, North Carolina.  She married Wade Anderson Gardner from Wilson.  He was born 2 May 1902, in Wilson County, North Carolina; and died 3 October 1967.  Lela died 27 August 1996. 
Children of Lela Smith and Wade:

1.  Jane Gardner was born 27 May 1929, in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida.  She married Robert E. Kirkland, Jr.  He was born 13 March 1925, in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina. 

1.  Robert E. Kirkland, III was born 13 February 1953, in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.  He married Teresa Lynn Jones.  Teresa was born 30 October 1957 in Wilson.
Child of Robert Kirkland III and Teresa Jones:

1.  Robert E. Kirkland, IV was born 1 November 1982 in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina. 

2.  Janet G. Kirkland was born 24 January 1955 in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.  She married William Russell Hesmer.  Russell Hesmer was born 20 October 1954.
Child of Janet Kirkland and W. Russell Hesmer:

1.  William Russell Hesmer, Jr. was born 23 November 1981 in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.

3.  Elizabeth B. Kirkland was born 27 August 1958, in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.

4.  Lela Lee Kirkland was born 3 February 1968, in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.

4.  Walton Wright Smith was born 5 February 1909, in Selma, Johnston County, North Carolina.  He married Geraldine M. Bezant 2 August 1945.  She was born 22 August 1923 in Hereford, England.  Walton Smith died 30 September 2003.

1.  Pamela A. Smith was born 13 December 1946 in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.  She married Campbell S. Edmonds.  He was born 29 November 1936 in Big Stone Gap, Wise County, Virginia.  He died 18 May 1979.

1.  Mary Anna Edmonds was born 31 August 1981 in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.

2.  Janet G. Smith was born 7 April 1948 in Wilson County, North Carolina.  She married Stephen Porter Darnell.  Stephen was born in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, 11 December 1948.

1.  Stephen Porter Darnell, Jr. was born 26 September 1977, in Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina. 

2.  Anna Lindsey Darnell was born 26 March 1980, in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina.

3.  Walton Wright Smith, Jr. was born 2 November 1951, in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.  Wright  married Diane Ludlum.  She was born in Bladenboro, Bladen County, North Carolina.
Children of W. Wright Smith, Jr. and Diane Ludlum:

1.  Walton Wright Smith, III was born 9 February 1979, in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.

2.  William Joseph Smith, called Will, was born 13 October 1981 in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.¹⁵⁵

5.  Jack [no middle name] Smith was born 15 March 1926, in Wilson, Wilson County, North Carolina.  He married 1st Joyce Merchant on May 3, 1953 in Broome County, New York.  She was born 20 April 1931 in Deposit, Broome County, New York.  He married 2nd Peggy Lou Horne.  Peggy was born 21 April 1934 in Harlan, Kentucky.  She married 1st Joe Fincher.  She had two daughters who were 22 months old when he died:  Kimberly B. Fincher and Rebecca H. Fincher, born 2 December 1960, in Lynchburg, Virginia.  She married Jack Smith 17 October 1964 in Lynchburg, Virginia.  Peggy died 26 October 2003.   
Children of Jack Smith and Joyce Merchant:

1.  David Scott Smith was born 10 May 1954 in Syracuse, New York.  He married Sharon Trainor.  Sharon was born 1 July 1954.
Children of David Smith and Sharon Trainor:

1.  Ryan Grey Smith was born 13 December 1985 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

2.  Katie Smith was born 8 August 1989.

2.  Robert Glen Smith was born 4 February 1956 in Syracuse, New York.  He married Sharon Lawhorne on 4 July 1981.  She was previously married and divorced, and had a child, Chris Duff, who was born 19 January 1976. 
Children of Robert Smith and Sharon Lawhorne:

1.  Jonathan Blake Smith was born 13 July 1982 in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina.

2.  Robert Cameron Smith was born 11 July 1985 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

3.  Jack William Smith was born 19 January 1958 in Syracuse, New York.  He married Audrey Wood on 19 April 1981.  Audrey was born 14 April 1958 in Lynchburg, Virginia.

5. Ida Jane Smith was born 29 January 1882.  She died 4 January 1900 at age 17 years, 11 months, and 6 days.  She did not marry.  She was buried in the Patrick Holland Cemetery near Micro in Johnston County, North Carolina with her parents.  A picture of her grave is in the Album section of this web site.
