11. Exum (also variously spelled Axon, Axum, Exom) was born about 1811.  He died 10 October 1880.  He was buried at Elisha Holland Cemetery near Pinkney, Wayne County, North Carolina.  He married 1st  Penniah (Penny) Boswell on 18 September 1831.  She was born 18 April 1811.  She is buried at Elisha Holland Cemetery, Pinkney, North Carolina, and has a wood head marker which gives her birth date and marriage date, but not her death date.  Exum married 2nd Martha Parks.  His children with her are on a separate page.

Exum's children with Penny Boswell:

1. Gaston Holland was born in 1832 in North Carolina.   He appears on the 1860 census for Johnston County, North Carolina in the district east of the Neuse River, Boon Hill Post Office.  He was 28 years old at the time, a physician by occupation, born in North Carolina.  Gaston Holland did not marry, as far as we know.

A William Gaston Holland enlisted in the Civil War as a Private on 16 July 1862 in Wake County, North Carolina, at the age of 30, under the name William M. G. Holland.  He mustered into "D" Co., NC 5th Infantry. He was in Early's and Garland's Brigade, Early's and D. H. Hill's Division of the Army of Northern Virginia.  He died of disease eight months after enlisting, on 12 March 1863, at Guinea Station, Virginia. 69   See listing in the Public Records section of this web site.  It is uncertain whether he is the same Gaston Holland who was the son of Exum Holland.  More information is needed to confirm this connection.

2. Jency Holland was born about 1834. Her family is covered in a separate section.

3. Jinnett Caswell (called Cattie) Holland was born 21 March 1836, in Wayne County, North Carolina.  He died 31 August 1898.  He married Marie (or Mary Ann) Worley who was born 26 September 1840, in Wayne County, North Carolina, and died on 19 May 1908.  Her gravestone has the year of her birth as 1846, which differs with other information.  They are both buried in the Caswell Holland Cemetery in Wayne County on North Carolina state road 1837 near the Johnston County line, referred to as cemetery number 111 in the Wayne County Historical Association book, Gravestone Inscriptions.  There is a picture of his gravestone in the Album's Cemetery Photo section of this web site; and there are three pictures of Jinnett Caswell Holland in the Album's Family Photo section, one in Elisha's section and two in Exum's.
Children of Jinnett Caswell Holland and Marie Worley:

      1. Ester Pierce was born 18 July 1899, died 26 October 1903 at age 4 years, 3 months, 8 days.  She was buried in the  Caswell Holland Cemetery.

      2. Hazel Pierce was born 18 June 1902, died 30 November 1911 at age 9 years, 5 months, 12 days.   She was buried in the Caswell Holland Cemetery.

      3. Wayne H. Pierce was born 24  December 1905, 1 August 1936 at age 30, and was buried in the Caswell Holland Cemetery.  This is just a guess, but possibly Cora Holland's husband was named Wayne Hackney Pierce and this son is named after him, thus his full name would be Wayne Hackney Pierce.

    7.   Gilbert Marion Holland (or Marion Gilbert Holland) was born born 3 March 1880 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  He married Patsy Edwards who was born 2 November 1888, also in Wayne County, North Carolina, daughter of John D. Edwards.  As to the confusion about his name, he is named on his infant son John Albert Holland's gravestone in the Jinnett Caswell Cemetery as "Infant of M.G. & P. Holland."  His death certificate has is name as Gilbert Marion Holland. He died 12 July 1952, in Wayne County and was buried at Raines Church Cemetery, Raines Crossroads, North Carolina.
Children of Marion Gilbert Holland and Patsy Edwards:

      1.  Marion Holland was born 26 December 1914, and died in May 1984. He married Mary Rockley.

      2.  John Albert Holland was born and died 10 April 1917; he is buried in Caswell Holland Cemetery.

      3.  Louise Holland was born 28 August 1919.

      4.  Gilbert Holland, Jr. was born 22 June 1925.

    8. Mary Bettie Holland was born 8 October 1883. She married Adron Thompson.
Children of Mary Bettie Holland and Adron Thompson:

      1. Kermit Adron Thompson was born 2 September 1908 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  He married Willie Mae White, 9 July 1932, in Dillon, South Carolina. They resided in Goldsboro, North Carolina; they had a drugstore.  Kermit Thompson died in November 1968.96
Children of Kermit Thompson and Millie Willie Mae White:

      2. Mary Lee Thompson was born about 1909.  She married Thel Smith.

4. Elisha G. Holland was born in 1838.  He died in 1884 and was buried in the Elisha Holland cemetery, referred to as cemetery number 242 in the Wayne County Historical Association book, Gravestone Inscriptions, referred to here as the Elisha Holland II Cemetery.   [I am not absolutely sure it is his grave that is there with these dates.] He married Sarah Hill, daughter of Will Hill and his wife Mariah.63
Children of Elisha Holland and Sarah Hill:

    1.  William Gaston Holland was born in 1870.  He died in 1924 at age 54.   He married Mattie Barnes.

    4.  Joseph Holland was born 1877 (est.); he married Madeline Peterson.
[?5.  Minnie Holland - possible child; married Mr. Starling.]

5. West Pratt (called P.) Holland was born in 1844; he died in 1906.

6. Louisa Jane Holland was born in 1844.  She died in 1906 at age 62.  Her family is covered in detail in a separate section.

7. Addison Pearson (called Doc or A. P.) Holland was born in 1846 and died in 1897.  He was buried in Willow Dale Cemetery in  Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina.  He married Belle Franklin, daughter of Calvin Franklin and his wife Cela.  She was born in 1847 and died 19 January 1925.  She was buried in Willow Dale Cemetery in Goldsboro, North Carolina next to her husband.  Buried with them are Add B. (presumably Addison P.) Holland (1873-1924), David G. Holland (1882-1918), Dock Holland, Jr. (1884-1905), and Halle Jayne Holland.
Children of Addison Pearson Holland and Belle Franklin:

    1.  Addison Pearson Holland, Jr. was born 18 March 1872.  He died 19 February 1924 and was buried at Willow Dale Cemetery in Goldsboro, North Carolina with his parents on 21 February 1924.  He was 51 years and 11 months when he died, and he was single.  There is a picture in the Album's Family Photo section, Exum's branch, of Addison Pearson Holland when he was a boy, called Pete, and as a grown man.

    2.  Bella Holland was born in 1874, probably in Wayne County, North Carolina.  She died 23 September 1901 in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina at age 27.  On 19 April 1893 at age 19, she married John Ollen Royall in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina.  John Royall was the son of William B. Royall (born 26 December 1841, likely in North Carolina; died 15 June 1907 in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina) and Elizabeth A. McLamb (born 1850, married 12 January 1866 at the age of 16).   There is a picture in the Album's Family Photo section, Exum's branch, of Bella Holland and also a picture of John Royal in front of their home.

After Bella Holland's death in 1901, John Ollen Royall married second Mollie Barnes, daughter of S. Barnes and Clarkie Davis.  Mollie was born 26 October 1869 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  She married John Royall in 1905 at the age of 36.  He died 6 December 1929 in Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.  Mollie Barnes died 11 November 1942 in Wayne County, North Carolina.64
Children of Bella Holland and John Ollen Royall:

      1.  Willie Spicer Royall was born about 1896, likely in Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina.

      2.  John Ollen Royall II was born 3 August, likely in Wayne County, North Carolina.  He died 19 June 1964 in Wayne County, North Carolina.

Children of John Ollen Royall and Mollie Barnes:

      1.  Barnes Feter Royall was born around 1907, probably in North Carolina.

    3.  David G. Holland was born 6 June 1882 and died 22 September 1918 at age 36.  He was buried in Willow Dale Cemetery in Goldsboro, North Carolina  with his parents.   He was not married.

    4.  Dock Holland, Jr.  was born in 1884 and died in 1905.

Does anybody know who Halle Jayne Holland, Alice J. Holland, or Walter C. Holland are?  They are associated with this family but I am not sure how.  Alice J. Holland and Walter C. Holland are listed in the 1906-1907 Goldsboro Directory in the household with Belle Holland, widow of Addison Pearson Holland, living at 604 William Street, Goldsboro.  Are they children of Addison Pearson Holland and Belle Franklin or are they grandchildren?  Halle Jayne Holland, as stated above, is buried with this family.

8. Calvin C. Holland was born 7 March 1848. His family is covered in a separate section.

About this History

My father's people came from Wayne County, North Carolina.  Although I live in Alabama now, I inherited his love of our heritage.  So it is with love for him and admiration for his strong desire to preserve our history that I dedicate my part in compiling and maintaining this Holland Family History and Tree to my father,

Louis Lea Holland
